A fiery blow is coming… A Korean film promising catharsis is heading to theaters.
Starring and produced by a box office titan who has drawn over 10 million viewers three years in a row.

Ma Dong-seok, the actor-producer known for shattering box office records, is back to conquer the theaters once more. His latest project, The Holy Night: Demon Hunters (hereafter The Holy Night), is set to premiere on April 30. This marks his return to the big screen one year after the explosive The Outlaws 4.

Set in a city thrown into chaos by a secret cult worshipping evil, The Holy Night follows a team formed to battle the darkness. Each member brings a unique strength to the mission—Ma Dong-seok’s character Bau uses brute force, Sharon (played by Seohyun) is gifted with exorcism powers, and Kim Gun (Lee Da-wit) is the strategic mind of the group. When Jung-won (Kyung Soo-jin) seeks help for her younger sister Eun-seo (Jung Ji-so), who has been possessed by a demon, the story takes a dramatic turn.

This is Ma Dong-seok’s first foray into the occult action genre. The film blends elements of traditional horror like The Exorcist with hard-hitting action and fantasy, creating a compelling multi-genre experience.

At the production press conference on April 2, Ma revealed, “I wondered what it would be like to combine horror with action—that's how this film was born.” He studied thousands of horror films during planning and production, recalling, “I once fell asleep with a horror movie paused, and the first thing I saw the next morning was a ghost’s face. That kind of immersion inspired this project.”

The trailer and character teasers have gone viral, with fans commenting:

“Can’t believe I’m watching real-life exorcism fighting,”

“He’s punching evil spirits now—what CAN’T he do?”

“This vibe is insane,”

“I know this taste… and I’m craving it again,”

“Seohyun’s acting keeps getting better,”

“I’m more worried for the demons than the heroes,”

“Ma Dong-seok is a genre.”

In the film, the Holy Night team works in seamless sync—Bau’s unmatched strength, Sharon’s exorcisms, and Kim Gun’s tactical planning make them a force to be reckoned with. Ma Dong-seok shared, “We clicked so well that it really felt like we were a team.”

The emotional core of the film revolves around the sisters, Jung-won and Eun-seo. Jung Ji-so delivers an intense performance as the possessed Eun-seo, while Kyung Soo-jin portrays Jung-won’s fierce determination to save her sibling.

Director Lim Dae-hee praised the cast, saying, “Kyung Soo-jin perfectly embodied a strong but warm-hearted character, and Jung Ji-so immersed herself in a very demanding role.” Ma Dong-seok added, “Ji-so was incredibly passionate. Audiences will see a whole new side of her.”

With The Holy Night, Ma Dong-seok aims to set another box office milestone. He has already surpassed 10 million admissions with Train to Busan (11.57M), Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds (14.41M), and Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days (12.27M). His The Outlaws series also achieved massive success—Part 2 (12.69M), Part 3 (10.68M), and Part 4 (11.50M). Ma is the only actor to hit the 10-million-viewer mark three years in a row.

What makes his streak more impressive is that it happened during the pandemic era when the movie industry faced major setbacks. This year’s top-performing film so far, Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17, drew about 3 million viewers—adding pressure and excitement around The Holy Night.

“I tried something different with this action style,” Ma explained. “The fight scenes against cult followers are based on boxing techniques for a fresh, powerful feel.”

The crew put great effort into making the occult-action fusion feel realistic. Director Lim said they focused on naturally blending supernatural elements with gritty reality. Stunt director Heo Myung-haeng added, “We aimed for movements that are both powerful and fast-paced.”

A behind-the-scenes video released on April 14 showcased intense filming on set. Each character has their own distinct action style, and the exorcism battles are choreographed like MMA fights—tense yet satisfying.

Appearing on SBS Power FM’s Park Ha-sun’s CineTown on April 17, Seohyun shared a funny moment:

“There was a scene where Ma Dong-seok had to break down a door. I asked him, ‘How do you break a door?’ and he just said, ‘A door’s no big deal.’ I’m glad he’s not the enemy.”

The Holy Night: Demon Hunters hits theaters nationwide on April 30. All eyes are on whether this electrifying film can breathe new life into Korea’s post-pandemic box office.
