'German-Born' Mun Ka-young Explains Her Bold Fashion—And Everyone’s Eyes Are Wide Open

Actress Mun Ka-young recently opened up about her bold fashion choices, childhood in Germany, and rising global popularity on the April 9 episode of the tvN variety show You Quiz on the Block.

Mun revealed that she was born in Germany, where she spent her early years before moving to South Korea at age 10. Born to a physicist father and a pianist mother, Mun has displayed versatility since childhood, becoming fluent in three languages and skilled in playing musical instruments. She began her acting career as a child actress.

Recently, she has also gained attention for her bold and unconventional fashion, especially her standout look at Seoul Fashion Week. Speaking about the outfit, she explained: “It was a collection piece from Fashion Week, and honestly, I like to challenge myself.”

“People tend to see me as calm, bookish, or well-behaved—and whenever that happens, I feel a strong urge to break the pattern and surprise them.”

This unexpected twist in personality charmed both the hosts and viewers.

Mun also shared a fun story from her childhood in Germany. While walking down the street, she was cast as a children's clothing model after being spotted by an advertiser. “I think I’ve always liked being in the spotlight,” she said with a smile. “My mom told me that I used to say I loved the sound of the camera shutter.”

Most recently, Mun Ka-young starred alongside actor Choi Hyun-wook in the romantic comedy-drama ‘My Dearest Nemesis', which aired its final episode in March with a peak rating of 4.1%, ranking #1 in its time slot.

Based on a webtoon, the drama—written by Kim Soo-yeon—garnered praise for its witty script and unique direction, breaking its own viewership records with each episode. The series also found massive global success, topping the weekly rankings in 109 countries via global streaming platform Rakuten Viki, including the U.S., U.K., France, Germany, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East, India, and Southeast Asia.

In addition, it ranked #1 in the Korean drama category on major local platforms like U-NEXT (Japan) and Vidio (Indonesia), proving its worldwide appeal.
