A Surprising Scene That Never Made It to Screen
Netflix’s trending K-drama When Life Gives You Tangerines (폭싹 속았수다) has captivated viewers with its heartfelt storytelling and strong performances. But one unexpected behind-the-scenes twist has fans talking: a planned cameo by Korean history lecturer Jeon Han-gil was completely edited out.

According to industry sources and online community posts, Jeon revealed in 2023 through an online history exam forum that he had filmed a special appearance for the drama. Fans speculated he would appear in the second half, particularly during scenes involving IU’s character Geum-myung launching an online lecture platform.
However, when the episode aired on March 28, Jeon was nowhere to be seen. Instead, a different actor appeared in what viewers believed to be his intended scene. Netflix has not disclosed when the re-shoot occurred or why the footage was discarded.
Was It About Politics?
Online speculation quickly spread about why Jeon's cameo was removed. Some netizens pointed to his recent political statements, including:
- Publicly opposing the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol
- Expressing support for the December 3 martial law incident
- Co-authoring a political book titled “Beyond the '87 System: Toward a New Republic of Korea”, with prominent conservative figures like:
Lawyer Shin Pyung (known as a mentor to President Yoon),
Politicians Kim Gi-hyeon, Na Kyung-won, Yoon Sang-hyun, and Cho Jung-hoon,
Former spokesperson Baek Ji-won,
Constitutional scholar Prof. Lee In-ho,
Writer Bok Geo-il, and others.

Jeon Han-gil, a well-known Korean history lecturer, has reportedly expressed support for conservative viewpoints and figures, including opposing the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol and endorsing past political events such as the December 3 martial law incident. Some speculate that his political stance may have influenced the editing decision in When Life Gives You Tangerines, though Netflix has denied any such connection, stating the cut was made for production-related reasons.
Netflix Responds
In an official statement, Netflix said:
“We made various edits and reshoots to create a higher-quality series. Jeon Han-gil’s footage was already removed prior to any public controversy. It had nothing to do with his political affiliations.”
Despite the clarification, skepticism remains. Posts on forums like Bobaedream, a progressive online community, expressed relief:
“If Jeon had appeared, it could’ve dragged the quality down — When Life Totally Bombed would've been more accurate.”

Context Behind the Political Controversy
As of early April 2025, South Korea is seeing heightened political tension ahead of the April 10 general elections, which many see as a de facto referendum on President Yoon. Opposition parties have raised calls for impeachment over issues such as alleged abuse of power, while Yoon's administration maintains that it is carrying out necessary reforms. These developments have intensified scrutiny around public figures and media appearances, especially in politically sensitive contexts.
