The long-awaited spin-off of Hospital Playlist is already No.1 in buzz and viewership intent ahead of its April 12 debut.
Even before its first episode airs, tvN’s new weekend drama Resident Playbook (언젠가는 슬기로울 전공의생활) has captured viewers’ attention—ranking No.1 in both recognition and intent to watch, according to OTT viewership data. The medical drama is a highly anticipated spin-off of Hospital Playlist, which wrapped up four years ago with ratings peaking at 15%.

Originally delayed due to a real-life doctors’ strike, the new series takes place in Jongno Yulje Hospital, a branch of the original show’s iconic Yulje Medical Center. This time, the spotlight shifts to OB-GYN residents as they navigate hospital life, growing pains, and unexpected friendships.

The cast features Go Youn-jung (as Oh I-young), and rising stars like Shin Si-ah, Kang You-seok, Han Ye-ji, and Jung Joon-won. Their characters—first-year residents—are already making waves through teaser posters showing exhausted expressions and chaotic daily routines. In particular, Go Youn-jung’s character wonders, “Can I ever be smart about this?” while Cynthia’s character refreshes her makeup between shifts, joking about avoiding office romance.

The drama’s mix of work stress, youthful charm, and quiet camaraderie mirrors the heart of Hospital Playlist while offering a fresh perspective through OB-GYN lens. Also featured is idol-turned-resident Eom Jae-il (played by Kang You-seok), a well-meaning overachiever who repeatedly calls his professor out of panic, while studious Kim Sa-bi (Han Ye-ji) clings to medical facts, hinting at future social mishaps. Fourth-year senior Koo Do-won (Jung Joon-won) rounds out the team, trying to stay calm amid chaos.

Behind the scenes, the original Hospital Playlist team returns: PD Shin Won-ho and writer Lee Woo-jung join forces with writer Kim Song-hee and director Lee Min-soo, bringing both continuity and new energy. The series will run for 12 episodes, airing Fridays and Saturdays at 9:10 PM KST starting April 12 on tvN, and streaming on TVING and Netflix.
As fans await the return of the “wise life” universe, all eyes are on whether Resident Playbook will capture hearts—and ratings—like its beloved predecessor.
