Lee Soo-hyuk Returns to the Big Screen Amid Good Day and Kim Soo-hyun Controversy

Actor Lee Soo-hyuk opened up about his big screen comeback at a press conference for the upcoming film 'Paran', held on March 28 at CGV Yongsan I’Park Mall in Seoul. Joined by director Kang Dong-in and co-star Ha Yoon-kyung, Lee discussed what it means to return to film after four years.

“I’ve been thinking about how to show that I’m more sincere about acting and my work than before,” he said. “This opportunity came at the right time. I’ve always studied what I want by learning from senior actors and directors, and this project felt like a movie I grew up watching—it was different.”

Currently appearing on the MBC variety show ‘Good Day’, Lee was asked about his growing popularity. Cool and calm, he responded, “Nothing’s changed.” He added, “It’s thanks to fans who see the good in me that I keep working hard. I’m grateful to show different sides of myself this year.”

Despite Good Day’s recent episode being pulled due to the controversy surrounding Kim Soo-hyun’s allegations, the show has officially resumed. The actor has faced backlash following resurfaced rumors alleging a past relationship with the late Kim Sae-ron during her underage years—claims he has strongly denied. The situation escalated after a YouTube channel affiliated with Garosero Research Institute (Garo Sero) made additional claims, prompting ongoing legal action and defamation lawsuits from both sides.

Directed and written by Kang Dong-in, who previously won awards at the Beijing Film Academy Festival and the Korean Youth Film Festival, ‘Paran’ is notable for being the first Korean film to center on clay shooting, while raising deep ethical questions like “What if you received an organ from a criminal?”

The title ‘Paran’ carries a double meaning in Korean—both “turmoil” (波瀾), reflecting the life-altering events the characters endure, and “breaking through” (破卵), symbolizing rebirth and hope.

The film was selected for the 24th Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF) in the Korean Cinema section, earning praise for its fresh take on themes of guilt, inherited sin, and psychological tension, drawing the largest number of live festivalgoers.

From drama hits like Tomorrow and Queen Woo to films like Pipeline, Lee Soo-hyuk showcases a new emotional depth in this role. Ha Yoon-kyung, known for About My Daughter and Gangnam B-Side, brings intensity and nuance to Mi-ji.

With its bold concept, strong performances, and genre-blending tone, Paran is one of the most anticipated Korean films this spring.

The film premieres on April 9.
