Disney+ original Hyper Knife sparks global buzz with Park Eun-bin and Sol Kyung-gu’s intense psychological showdown
Just four episodes in, Disney+ Korea’s latest original drama Hyper Knife is already making serious waves. Since dropping Episodes 3 and 4 on March 26, the medical thriller has surged to the No.1 spot on Disney+ in both Korea and Taiwan, according to global streaming tracker FlixPatrol. It also ranked No. 2 in Japan and Hong Kong, and made the Top 5 in Turkey and Singapore, signaling its breakout global appeal.

Premiered on March 19, Hyper Knife has quickly gained momentum through word-of-mouth and intense plot twists. It’s especially significant for Disney+, which has been seeking its next big hit following the global success of Moving.
The platform’s first original medical thriller, Hyper Knife tells the story of Jung Se-ok (played by Park Eun-bin), a once-celebrated neurosurgeon whose life was destroyed by her mentor, Choi Deok-hee (played by Sol Kyung-gu). When they reunite, a psychological war begins—blending slow-burn tension with gripping medical intrigue and layered performances.

The newly released Episodes 3 and 4 further deepen the suspense. As Se-ok closes in on exposing Deok-hee, he begins turning the tables—culminating in a chilling cliffhanger where Deok-hee drives off with a detective who holds secrets about Se-ok’s past. The scene revealed the duality of his character, leaving viewers shaken.
Park Eun-bin delivers a complete transformation in this role—far removed from her previous hits like The King’s Affection, Extraordinary Attorney Woo, and Castaway Diva. Her portrayal of a brilliant yet emotionally volatile surgeon obsessed with the brain, surgery, and revenge shows off her acting range, especially in moments where her character teeters between brilliance and breakdown.
In a recent interview, Park shared, “This script pulled me in immediately. The idea of a neurosurgeon and the psychological depth of the brain was fascinating. And working with Sol Kyung-gu? That sealed the deal.”
Sol Kyung-gu, for his part, delivers a haunting performance as Choi Deok-hee—a man who shows little emotion to others but holds complicated feelings toward his former student. Through subtle gestures, nuanced tones, and loaded silences, he creates a chilling antagonist. Interestingly, he revealed during the drama's press event that Park Eun-bin’s casting was a key reason he joined the project, saying, “I decided to do it because she was playing Se-ok.”
How Hyper Knife Compares to Other Korean Medical Dramas
Korean medical dramas have long captivated audiences with a unique blend of emotional depth and high-stakes storytelling. But Hyper Knife carves out a niche all its own, blending the intense psychological warfare of a thriller with the high-pressure world of neurosurgery.
Compared to other recent medical dramas like The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call and Hospital Playlist, Hyper Knife pushes the boundaries of the genre. While Trauma Code (starring Ju Ji-hoon) focuses on life-saving action and trauma care in a high-pressure ER setting, and Hospital Playlist takes a slice-of-life approach to showcase heartwarming friendships and everyday hospital life, Hyper Knife dives deep into obsession, revenge, and manipulation.
Ju Ji-hoon’s role in The Trauma Code brings a battlefield-hardened edge to the medical field, portraying Dr. Baek Kang-hyuk’s unconventional methods to reform a struggling trauma center. Meanwhile, Go Youn-jung is set to lead Wise Resident Life, a spin-off of Hospital Playlist, focusing on the everyday struggles and growth of young medical residents.
While these dramas highlight professional growth and camaraderie, Hyper Knife zeroes in on inner darkness and personal vendettas, with Park Eun-bin’s character constantly balancing surgical genius with unsettling rage. It’s this darker psychological angle that sets Hyper Knife apart—and may explain its explosive international reception.
Future episodes of Hyper Knife promise even deeper psychological warfare as secrets from Se-ok and Deok-hee's shared past begin to surface. Will their history unravel them, or will one emerge victorious in this brutal game of mind and scalpel?
New episodes air every Wednesday on Disney+. As the story escalates, Hyper Knife is not just dominating viewership rankings—it’s redefining what K-dramas can do within the medical thriller genre.
