A top K-pop icon heads for the big screen—Japanese Roundup remake could mark his film debut
In an unexpected turn that’s caught fans by surprise, TVXQ’s U-Know Yunho is reportedly in talks to star in the Japanese remake of The Roundup (범죄도시)—the gritty Korean crime film that launched one of the most successful action franchises in recent years.

On March 25, SM Entertainment confirmed that Yunho has received an offer to join the Japanese production and is currently reviewing the role. While details about his character remain under wraps, industry insiders speculate that he may be tapped for the Jang Chen role—originally played by Yoon Kye-sang and widely considered one of the most iconic villains in modern Korean cinema.
If confirmed, this would mark Yunho’s first-ever film appearance, despite a successful acting career in K-dramas. His potential leap to the big screen is generating buzz—not only because of the role’s weight, but also because of the global legacy of The Roundup series, which has already spawned four blockbuster installments in Korea.
From Idol to International Actor
Yunho made his debut in 2003 as the leader of TVXQ, and by 2005, he had already expanded into the Japanese market. He’s since become a household name in both countries, thanks to a long list of hit tracks like Hug, Mirotic, Keep Your Head Down, Catch Me, and The Chance of Love.
Mirotic, released in 2008, became a defining K-pop anthem and solidified TVXQ’s status as one of the most influential acts in the genre. In recent years, Yunho has built a strong solo career as well, showcasing his versatility as both a performer and artist.

The Director Connection
Interestingly, Yunho is also set to appear in the upcoming Disney+ original series Fine, directed by Kang Yoon-sung, the same filmmaker who helmed the original The Roundup film in 2017. Kang’s involvement in both projects has only fueled speculation that Yunho’s casting in the Japanese remake is more than just a coincidence.
A Bold Move From Music Into Film
If the deal goes through, this would mark a new chapter in Yunho’s career—transitioning from music and television to international film, and possibly embodying one of the most intense and complex roles in crime-action cinema.
For fans, the idea of seeing the polished, charismatic idol take on a dark, villainous role like Jang Chen is both surprising and intriguing. And for Yunho, it’s a bold step into new creative territory.
More updates on casting and production are expected in the coming months.
Stay tuned—this K-pop icon may soon be making his big-screen debut in a way no one saw coming.
In the meantime, fans can tune into U-KNOW's 3rd mini album Reality Show, featuring aespa's Karina.
