The Reality of Miscarriage

A miscarriage, also known as spontaneous abortion, occurs when a pregnancy ends before 20 weeks. In most early cases, the fetus stops developing due to chromosomal abnormalities, which account for 50–60% of early miscarriages. Other factors include hormonal imbalances, endocrine disorders like diabetes, immune system issues, and structural abnormalities in the uterus. Environmental factors, infections, and excessive stress can also contribute.

Han and her husband, actor Yeon Jung-hoon, eventually made peace with the idea of a child-free life. However, in one final attempt, they turned to IVF (in vitro fertilization)—and miraculously, she became pregnant with their first child. She later went on to have a second healthy pregnancy.

The Silent Struggle Many Couples Face

For many couples, pregnancy brings excitement and anticipation, but miscarriage remains a painful reality that is often overlooked. Some women experience recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL), which is defined as two or more consecutive miscarriages. This can stem from genetic issues, immune system disorders, or anatomical complications.

Doctors recommend waiting at least three months after a miscarriage before trying to conceive again, allowing both physical and emotional healing. Regular OB-GYN checkups, lifestyle adjustments, and medical support play crucial roles in preventing recurrent miscarriage.
