A Mystery Romance With Life-or-Death Stakes

‘The Witch’ follows the story of a woman who is feared as a "witch" after a series of tragic accidents befall men who fall for her. Determined to break this curse, one man risks everything to prove her innocence and save her from a fate dictated by death itself.

The fourth episode, which aired on February 23, marked the beginning of Dong-jin’s (played by Park Jin-young) desperate journey to prove Mi-jung (played by Roh Jung-eui) is not a witch. Initially, Dong-jin writes a research report debunking the existence of witches, but he soon realizes that statistical errors in his findings inadvertently frame Mi-jung as one. Frustrated by his inability to find the truth, he is further shaken by the death of his mother, Mi-sook (played by Jang Hye-jin), which pushes him to refocus his efforts.

Haunted by guilt for once casting Mi-jung out of their town, Mi-sook repeatedly reads Dong-jin’s report, firmly believing that Mi-jung is not a witch.

A Data Analyst’s Fight Against the Unknown

Once a promising data miner, Dong-jin leaves his job to stay by Mi-jung’s side.

His goal? To analyze patterns surrounding the mysterious incidents and prevent further harm. In doing so, he not only takes a scientific approach to her so-called "curse" but also shows his thoughtful and caring nature—repairing a broken streetlight in an empty alley so Mi-jung can safely feed stray cats, for example.

Meanwhile, the suspect behind the vandalism of Dong-jin’s car is revealed: Jung-ho (played by Jung Yi-gab), a factory owner whose business collapsed after his bank loan was revoked due to an algorithm Dong-jin had developed. Realizing that numbers alone cannot explain everything in life, Dong-jin begins to question his entire belief system.

A Search for the Truth Begins

As the episode comes to a close, Dong-jin travels to his hometown of Taebaek in search of answers about Mi-jung’s curse. Gathering old classmates and searching through school records, he sets out to uncover hidden truths. The final scene, showing his determined expression as he digs through the archives, leaves viewers on edge—will he finally find the key to solving the mystery?

Director’s Insight: A Story of Fear and Logic

Director Kim Tae-kyun, who leads the production of ‘The Witch’, shared key insights into the drama’s direction.

"Mi-jung has distanced herself from people out of fear—everyone who gets close to her either gets hurt or dies. Dong-jin, on the other hand, knows that uncovering the truth behind the so-called 'death rule' could lead to more sacrifices. That’s why he must secretly prove the law without Mi-jung realizing it."

With its unique blend of mystery, romance, and suspense, ‘The Witch’ continues to captivate viewers.
