2025's Girl Group Rookie Lineup!

The next wave of K-pop is on the horizon, and it's already shaking up industry norms. While the fourth generation—led by powerhouse girl groups like aespa, IVE, NewJeans, STAYC, and LE SSERAFIM—continues to dominate, the rise of a new era is undeniable.

Since last year, fifth-gen groups such as YG’s BABYMONSTER, HYBE’s ILLIT, Cube Entertainment’s KISS OF LIFE, F&F Entertainment’s UNIS, and THE BLACK LABEL’s Meovv have been making their mark, signaling a generational shift.

Yet, the lines between generations remain fluid. Some argue that defining idols by generation matters less than establishing a distinct artistic identity. Still, the class of 2025 stands at a unique crossroads—poised as the face of fifth-gen idols while setting the stage for the potential sixth generation.

One standout trend? Age. Most upcoming rookies were born between 2006 and 2010, making their debut in line with industry expectations. But one group is turning heads by introducing a 1997-born member, breaking the long-held belief that girl group idols must debut young. Another group is making waves by launching with an all-Korean lineup, a bold move in an era where global diversity is the norm.

Starship Entertainment, home to IVE and WJSN, is set to debut its newest girl group, KiiiKiii . With members born between 2005 and 2010, the group is already generating buzz for its all-Korean lineup—a rarity in an era dominated by multinational teams.

The group is set to release their debut album on March 24. Ahead of their official debut, they pre-released the music video for "I DO ME" on March 16, generating an enthusiastic response.

One of the standout members is A-na, whose name represents the idea of being "A in everything"—hinting at her ambition to excel in every aspect of idol life. She is already gaining attention as the group's visual member.

Unlike aespa, who pioneered SM’s AI-integrated lore, H2H is rumored to be building a completely different world of its own. Will they successfully carve out a fresh identity within SM’s extensive universe of idols? Their debut single 'The Chase' is set for release on 24th at 6 PM KST on various music streaming platforms, with the physical album also dropping on the same day.

Perhaps the most unconventional lineup of the year, UDTT (Woo Dang Tang Tang Girls) is making headlines for featuring Risako, a 27-year-old Japanese member. The group consists of five members: Risako (1997, leader), Han Chae-hee (2001), Koo Han-na (2004), Kwon Ye-jin (2006), and Jung Se-na (2006). Their positions will be revealed in detail at a later time.

A former contestant on 'Girls Planet 999: The Grand Battle', Risako has an extensive background as a backup dancer for Japan’s biggest artists. Her late debut challenges the industry norm, where idols typically debut in their teens or early twenties. Adding to the intrigue, the group’s youngest member, Jung Sena (born in 2006), is nine years younger than Risako—creating a fascinating generational contrast within the team.

Although their official debut date has not yet been announced, they have been gaining significant attention by pre-releasing performance videos and other content.

With its bold approach to age diversity and performance experience, UDTT could mark a shift in how K-pop defines a “rookie” idol.

With a wave of new girl groups set to debut—each bringing fresh concepts and redefining industry norms—2025 is shaping up to be an exciting year for K-pop. At the same time, established powerhouse groups continue to dominate, ensuring that fans will have no shortage of music, performances, and surprises to look forward to.

As the next generation of idols steps into the spotlight, one question remains: Which rookie are you most excited to see take the stage?
