“Drunk Driving Is a Serious Mistake, But...”
Following the tragic passing of actress Kim Sae-ron on February 16, discussions about societal attitudes toward redemption have intensified.

In response, a well-known psychiatrist argued that while drunk driving is undoubtedly a grave mistake, the lack of opportunities for redemption in society is also a significant issue.
On February 17, Dr. Najong Ho, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine, expressed his condolences in a Facebook post, writing, “May Kim Sae-ron rest in peace. The sweet, innocent girl from The Man from Nowhere endured so much hardship in recent years—it’s heartbreaking to read about it in the news.”
Dr. Na acknowledged the gravity of her DUI but added, “If the punishment is too lenient, that’s a flaw in the legal system. But completely ostracizing someone for making a mistake without any chance of recovery is not the mark of a healthy society.”
He went on to say, “Our society discards those who have made mistakes and moves on as if nothing happened. It feels like a real-life Squid Game.”

Dr. Na emphasized that Kim Sae-ron’s passing should not be viewed as an isolated personal tragedy, but rather as the result of a complex interplay of social, economic, psychological, and biological factors. He added, “It feels like she was driven to the edge of a cliff.”
Recalling the intense scrutiny Kim faced after news broke that she had taken on a part-time job, he questioned, “How many more lives must be lost before we stop engaging in relentless public shaming? It’s time for a serious social conversation.”
Dr. Na has previously spoken out about the need for a more forgiving approach in Korean society. In an August 2023 YouTube video, he argued, “Instead of permanently exiling individuals who make mistakes, we need a system that allows them to return while preventing repeat offenses.”
He also offered a message of self-compassion, stating, “I hope people are not too harsh on themselves. Everyone is doing their best—please don’t drown yourself in excessive guilt.”
Meanwhile, police confirmed that Kim Sae-ron was found deceased at her home in Seongsu-dong, Seoul, at 4:54 PM on February 16. There were no signs of forced entry or foul play, and no suicide note was found. Investigations into the cause of her death are ongoing.
