A Shocking Box Office Success for a Spine-Chilling Occult Film

The Korean film Dark Nuns has emerged as the second movie (after Hitman 2) of the year to surpass its break-even point, delivering an unexpected box office triumph. Initially generating buzz for its gripping occult genre, the film has surpassed 1.6 million viewers, officially breaking even.

Dark Nuns tells the story of a group of individuals who attempt a forbidden ritual to save a boy possessed by a powerful evil spirit. The film’s intense performances and immersive storyline have captivated audiences, creating a lasting impact.

Since its release on January 24, the film has maintained consistent box office momentum. As of February 10, Dark Nuns has drawn 1,600,315 viewers, surpassing its break-even point, according to the Korean Film Council’s Integrated Ticketing System. The film is also gaining traction overseas, hinting at global success.

The movie has been pre-sold to 160 countries, signaling its international appeal. In Indonesia, it broke the record for the highest-opening Korean film and currently holds second place in terms of total ticket sales among Korean films released in the country.

In the Philippines, Dark Nuns topped the box office for two consecutive weeks after its release, demonstrating its growing influence domestically and abroad. The global rollout is set to expand, with upcoming releases in Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, and Laos on February 6, followed by North America and Myanmar on February 7, Singapore and Malaysia on February 13, and Vietnam on February 21.

Dark Nuns stands out from traditional occult films with its fresh plot and compelling characters. Song Hye-kyo portrays Yoonia, delivering a commanding performance as a woman determined to use any means necessary to succeed. Jeon Yeo-been plays Michaela, whose journey of personal growth amidst chaos is portrayed with emotional depth. Lee Jin-wook (Squid Game 2 star) takes on the role of Father Paolo, depicting a man torn between science and faith, while Moon Woo-jin’s chilling performance as the possessed boy Hee-jun heightens the film’s tension.

The combination of exceptional acting and a unique storyline has helped the film stand out in a crowded genre, gaining traction through word of mouth.

With its genre experimentation and powerhouse performances, Dark Nuns is expected to continue attracting more viewers.

Harbin is set in 1909 and follows the intense chase and suspense-filled conflicts between those heading to Harbin with a singular purpose and those pursuing them. Released on Christmas Eve (24th) last year, the film savored early box office success. However, as of February 10, 2025, the film has recorded 4.89 million viewers, just short of its 5 million break-even target.
