Tragic Accident Led to wave of postponements in the K-pop industry.
The devastating Jeju Air tragedy on December 29(KST) has led to a wave of postponements in the K-pop industry, as artists and agencies express condolences and adjust their schedules in respect for the victims. Groups like SEVENTEEN’s unit BSS, IVE, and Stray Kids announced delays in their promotional activities, album releases, and comeback schedules.
SEVENTEEN’s first unit group BSS (Seungkwan, DK, and Hoshi), who were set to make their much-anticipated comeback on January 8, postponed the release of content for their second single album 'TELEPARTY'. Scheduled to drop official photos on December 29, the group announced via social media, "The photo upload schedule for the second single album 'TELEPARTY' has been postponed. We will notify fans of the revised schedule soon. We extend our deepest condolences to the victims of this tragedy and ask for your kind understanding."
IVE also delayed promotional activities for their upcoming third EP, 'IVE EMPATHY', originally set for December 29 and 30. Starship Entertainment stated, "We regret to inform you that the promotional schedule for IVE's 3rd EP 'IVE EMPATHY' has been postponed. We will announce the updated schedule at a later date and kindly ask for your understanding in this matter. We extend our deepest condolences to the victims and their bereaved families affected by the recent tragedy."
Stray Kids joined the industry-wide gesture of respect, with their agency JYP Entertainment announcing the postponement of the release of "Song By," which was originally planned for December 29. " We ask for your kind understanding and would like to express our deepest condolences regarding the tragic incident," the agency said in an official statement.
Also, artists such as KENTA SANGGYUN, CREZL, VIVIZ, and many more have postponed their plans in light of the tragedy. Celebrities like G-Dragon, Park Myung-soo, Lim Young-woong, Sung Si-kyung, and Jaurim have also publicly expressed their condolences, joining the national wave of mourning.
In addition to the K-pop industry, several high-profile entertainment events were also canceled or postponed. JTBC’s 'Newsroom' featuring actor Hyun Bin, the variety show 'Take Care of My Refrigerator' featuring Song Joong-ki, the 2024 MBC Entertainment Awards, 'King of Mask Singer', and SBS’s 'Running Man' were among the cancellations. EXO member D.O.’s film 'Secret' also delayed its promotional events scheduled for December 30.
The tragic accident occurred on December 29(KST) when Jeju Air flight 7C2216, traveling from Bangkok to Muan International Airport, veered off the runway during landing, resulting in a fire. Of the 181 passengers onboard, only two crew members survived, with 179 confirmed fatalities. In light of the incident, the South Korean government has declared a national mourning period from December 29 to January 4.
