The mystery thriller 'Following', directed by rookie filmmaker Kim Se-hwi, has taken the Korean entertainment scene by storm. Released on Netflix on December 12, the film claimed the No. 1 spot on Netflix Korea’s 'Today’s Top 10 Movies' chart within just a day, on December 13(KST).

It surpassed major hits like the comedy 'Anemone', which had held the top spot for two days, and the political thriller '12.12: THE DAY', which has been trending amid renewed interest in stories of martial law.

'Following' follows the story of a real estate agent, Gu Jung-tae, played by Byun Yo-han, who becomes a suspect in the murder of a social media influencer, Han So-ra, played by Shin Hye-sun. To clear his name, Jung-tae embarks on a journey to uncover the truth behind her death. The cast includes talented actors like Lee El, Yoon Byung-hee, Park Ye-ni, Ji Hyun-joon, Jang Sung-beom, and Shim Dal-gi, adding depth to the gripping narrative.

Filmed in February 2021, the movie faced a three-year delay before its theatrical release in May 2024. With a production budget of 7 billion KRW (approximately $4.88 million) and a break-even point of 1.2 million viewers, the film ultimately attracted 1.23 million theatergoers. Despite never topping the box office during its run, 'Following' gained traction through word-of-mouth, reaching 1 million viewers within 22 days and ranking 23rd in overall 2024 box office performance.

The film boasts an impressive viewer rating of 8.22 on major Korean portals. Audiences praised its engaging plot, tight pacing, and outstanding performances, calling it the best thriller of the year and commending Shin Hye-sun and Byun Yo-han for their riveting acting. Comments included, “Time flew by—what an incredible thriller,” “Shin Hye-sun’s Joker-like transformation in the final act is unforgettable,” and “The performances and plot twists are mind-blowing. Easily one of the best films this year.”
